Done at House of Secrets

For this project during my internship at HoS we had less than a week to work on the pitch, but managed to present a final quality shot. This project improved my shading skills in Maya considerably. I was involved in the modeling, shading and lighting part of the production. This was possible mostly because of the friendly atmosphere in House of Secrets. Working there was almost like staying at home, having fun on a personal project.

Have a look also at the tagon we made:

This is one of the several ideas which I had in mind when I started learning 3D Max. The main source of inspiration is a memory of a MTG card. I couldn’t remember the card and the artist, but the image of a fat robot-like creature was stil vivid when I created my version. The work process took me 2 days form scratch to final render.

Just a few years later I found the name of the MTG cart – it’s Myr Enforcer and the art on it is by Greg Staples.

Personal project
Ever since I started exploring 3D graphics, I wanted to make a scene with LEGO. When an online speed contest with the topic “games” was announced  on 3dbg.com, I decided to use the opportunity and accomplish this little dream of mine. This was also a test with the newly introduced Physical Camera and a bunch of other new features of V-Ray. It took me one day from scratch to final render and the picture was actually the winner.

This is the package of my original toy along with a few steps in the process:

If for some reason you haven't heard of StarCraft, you should google it now (and be sorry that you missed it when it was the coolest game for PC). As with many other gamers, I was amazed by Blizzard's product. Here is the result.

Done at PostPanic

Director: Chris Staves
VFX supervisor: Ivor Goldberg
3D:Jeroen, Marnix, Jurrien, Mathijs, me
2D: Miro, Aras, Stef, Jord

During the first week of production for this project we got total freedom. I worked with Jurrien on the second shot and had one of my most productive weeks of modelling. When Chris came back, we already have started working on a basic lighting setup.

The first project on which I worked during my internship at PostPanic. The attention paid to even the smallest details was inspirational. I contributed with modelling, shading, lighting, a little bit of animation and dynamic simulations.

Howdy, if you read this you have received a link from me or a common friend. Truly thank you for taking the time to spread the word about this site. In this busy world postponing means forgetting, so please take action immediately after reading this. To decide to whom you will forward my sitethe facebook page or the page you are reading, you need to know 3 things:

1. What do I do?

In essence my work is translating messages into (moving) images. What comes in can be simplified to a single sentence and what comes out is hopefully a beautiful, memorable movie. My favourite projects are TV commercials, corporate videos and music videos. Here are some examples how a message becomes a movie:
“This shoe is mysteriously good”, Asics
“We are changing the software”, PON-CAT
“Walk-in is different from walking”, Heineken

2. Why should anyone care?

The advantages of contacting me and not a studio or another freelancer are:
More efficient (and cheaper) than a studio. Maybe my daily rate is higher, but I don’t waste time and money in internal communication, expensive office and unnecessary hardware. My clients pay only for my work.
More flexible than an usual freelancer. Due to my different education, I’m better prepared technically than other freelancers in the Netherlands. I use non-destructive workflows, which makes last minute changes possible.
Scalable outside the Netherlands. I still keep in touch with colleagues in Bulgaria, which allows me to bring on board amazing artists and keep the project financially viable.

3. Who should know about this?

My target group are decision makers in the advertisement industry or in the communications departments of organisations (companies, universities, municipalities). Again, some examples:
ad agencies: producers, art or creative directors
big companies, universities, governmental institutions: internal and external communication/marketing officers
small companies: the boss
municipalities: communication advisors
music bands: manager, PR people

This is it, now think if you know someone who might know someone that needs their messages upgraded to the glorious life of a 3D animation. Then forward my site, the facebook page or the page you are reading. Thanks:)

For this project I had to capture the cosiness of a mountain apartment hotel. I chose for sunset light because of its comforting warm color and combined it with contrasty color scheme for more depth. Kostadin Kostadinov helped with the design and compositing. The picture on the wall is by Andrew Gonzalez. V-Ray's super fast displacement was used for the fireplace. The carpet is made with VrayFur.
